Advent candle colors and order

The four Advent candles stand for hope, peace, joy and love; some churches call them the Prophecy, Bethlehem, Shepherds' and Angels' candles. The purple (or blue) candles are lit on the first, second and fourth Sundays of Advent, and the rose candle on the third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday. A white Christ candle in the center is lit on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day for the birth of Jesus. See our Christ candles and the Advent wreath and candle guide.

What each Advent candle represents

One more candle is lit on each Sunday of Advent, so by the fourth Sunday all four wreath candles burn together. Many churches name and explain them this way, though the theme of each week varies by tradition:

First Sunday of Advent: the Prophecy candle (purple or blue), for hope, recalling the prophets who foretold the birth of Christ.
Second Sunday: the Bethlehem candle (purple or blue), for peace, recalling the journey to Bethlehem.
Third Sunday, Gaudete Sunday: the Shepherds' candle (the rose or pink candle), which represents joy.
Fourth Sunday: the Angels' candle (purple or blue), for love.
Christmas Eve or Christmas Day: the Christ candle, a white candle in the center of the wreath, for the birth of Jesus and the start of the Christmas season.

Lighting the candles through the four weeks of Advent is a simple way for a congregation or a family to prepare our hearts for Christmas during the season of Advent.

Advent candle sets and Advent wreath candles

An Advent candle set gives you the four wreath candles in matching colors, and some sets add the white Christ candle as a fifth. Advent wreath candles must fit your wreath: tapers and tube candles for wreaths with 1-1/2" sockets, pillar candles for wreaths with flat candle plates, and refill sets for refillable candles. If you are not sure which wreath candle fits, check the socket size of your wreath or ask us.
