Choosing a chalice
A chalice is the cup that holds the wine at Mass or the Lord's Supper, and the paten is the plate for the bread or hosts. Buying them as a set means the two match.
Many are solid brass plated in 24K gold. Others are silvertone or brasstone aluminum, and one set is handmade from olive wood. Some are made in the USA by Alviti. The pastor's set is a small cup and paten, 3-1/2 inches tall. A common cup is a larger cup shared by the congregation. Carrying cases are imitation leather with a soft velvet lining.
